Indianapolis 500 Tickets: Fun Facts

The historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) promises an exhilarating holiday. However, the thrill is only open for those who get theirIndianapolis 500 ticketsearly. Although the venue welcomes more than 250,000 spectators, the seats are never sufficient. This inadequacy of seats is not surprising, given the number of incidents and traditions that keep the grounds throbbing each year. Some fun facts and conventions associated with the Indy 500 are as follows:

Tradition of milk: The Greatest Spectacle in Racing has a tradition of offering milk to the winners. This custom was instituted in 1936, when Louis Meyer drank a bottle of buttermilk after winning the race for the third time. A local dairy company recognized it as a marketing opportunity and began offering milk to every winner henceforth.

The tradition of having milk was broken by Emerson Fittipaldi in 1993 when he drank orange juice in an attempt to promote the citrus industry. Fittipaldi owned many orange groves in Brazil. He was the second driver in the history of the race to have flouted this custom since its establishment in 1936. Fittipaldi was criticized and ridiculed for years afterwards for this action. Even in 2008, he was jeered by some fans.

IMS facts: The IMS, which is now home to the Indy 500, actually hosted a helium gas-filled balloon contest as its first event. The gas balloon competition took place on June 5, 1909, two months prior to the completion of the oval.

The IMS oval, covering 253 acres can fit Churchill Downs, the Yankee Stadium, the Roman Colosseum, the Vatican City as well as the Rose Bowl inside it.

Historic players: A.J. Foyt Jr. has competed in 35 Indy races (1958-1992), more than anyone else did till date. He has led the largest number of races (13) and seen four victories.

Ray Harroun began from the 28thposition in the first Indy racingin 1911. He won and never attempted racing again. Ray had taken a total of 6 hours and 42 minutes to complete 500 miles!
